FBI probes ex-Chicago newsman

BY ROBERT FEDER Sun-Times Columnist
They didn't call him "Scary Larry" (and a lot of other names) for nothing.

Larry Mendte, who was never far from controversy as a news anchor and reporter at CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2 from 1991 to 1996, is being investigated by the FBI for allegedly snooping on a former colleague's e-mail.

Mendte, 51, who's been placed on leave from his job as anchor at KYW-TV in Philadelphia, is suspected of opening "hundreds" of messages sent to and from his ex-anchor partner, Alycia Lane, according to published reports.

Lane was fired from the CBS-owned station last January after her arrest in New York on charges of hitting a female police officer. Lane, who was later cleared of the charges, is suing her former station.

Authorities seized Mendte's personal computer from his home, where he lives with his wife, ex-Channel 2 anchor Dawn Stensland, who now anchors for WTXF-TV in Philadelphia.

Although he never ran afoul of the law here, Mendte became a lightning rod for criticism of Channel 2's tabloid format, which seemed tailor-made to his showy performance style and slick production skills.
