Shaw stopper

ABC 7's veteran political reporter ready for 'more independent life'

Andy Shaw, who has been covering politics for ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7 for 25 years, is getting ready to call it quits.

But not before he wraps up one more presidential election.

"I'm still full of energy, and I still love my job here at ABC 7 --including the stories I cover and the folks I work for and with --but it's time to cut the corporate tie," said Shaw, who plans to step down sometime after November.

As he approaches his 60th birthday next week, Shaw said he's looking to "carve out a more independent life that includes things I can do on my own time schedule, like traveling with my wife, Mary, and beating Chicago winters once and for all."

Professionally, Shaw said his plans include writing, doing some TV and talk radio work, teaching, and starting a political consulting business.

It's been a great ride for the lifelong Chicagoan, who began as a reporter for the Sun-Times (and the late City News Bureau) before he moved to TV in 1976.

Could he still change his mind?

"I have to admit the Obama campaign makes it a bit harder to think about leaving, but maybe he or John McCain will need a press secretary," he said.
