No one pays more lip service to honoring "the community" than Joe Ahern, glad-handing president and general manager of WBBM-Channel 2.

That's why staffers are still scratching their heads over the CBS-owned station's last-minute withdrawal from the 79th annual Bud Billiken Parade, the premier summer event of the South Side and largest African-American parade in the country.

"We have always supported the Bud Billiken Parade and had every intention of participating in 2008," a Channel 2 spokeswoman said. "Unfortunately, the parade organizers did not accept our annual contribution to the Defender Charities this year."

For the record, Fox Channel 32 also opted out of the parade for the third year in a row.
