When Illinois' new statewide smoking ban goes into effect Jan. 1, a west suburban radio station has vowed to give up "Smokin'," too: NextMedia Group classic hits WERV-FM (95.9) will retire from its playlist the song made famous by Boston.

"We are devoting Dec. 31 to supporting our listeners who still smoke," said ex-smoker Matt DuBiel, the River's operations director. "If they have to quit smoking in public, we will, too!"

Boston's "Smokin' " will be repeated on the River throughout the day Dec. 31 -- along with tips on kicking the habit and public service announcements from the American Cancer Society.
