Laura Castaneda, a Chicago native who once worked as a weekend assignment editor at ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7, is returning to make her debut on local television.

"The Devil's Breath," a half-hour documentary she wrote and produced, will air at 10:30 p.m. Friday on Window to the World Communications WTTW-Channel 11.

It profiles four undocumented immigrants who died trying to cross the border during a 2007 firestorm in San Diego. "The Devil's Breath" is the Native American name for the Santa Ana winds that fueled the fires.

Castaneda, who also became a reporter in Tucson, Ariz., and San Diego, produces a magazine show for public TV and teaches at San Diego City College.
