Recording Industry, Online Radio Reach Royalty Deal

The recording industry and online music services have reached a landmark royalty deal for streaming music.

The agreement proposes a mechanical royalty rate for streaming and limited downloads, including for subscription and ad-supported services. Interactive streaming services and limited downloads will generally pay a mechanical royalty of 10.5 percent of revenue, less any amounts owed for performance royalties.

The Recording Industry Association of America, the Digital Media Association, the National Music Publishers' Association, the Nashville Songwriters Association International and the Songwriters Guild of America have all agreed to the new rate.

The deal doesn't address rates for physical product or permanent music downloads.

U.S. Copyright Royalty Judges are expected to issue a ruling on the rates by October 2.
