Curtain call
A sampling of reader reactions to columnist who's bowing out

Enough about me. Here's what some of you said about my decision to sign off from the broadcast beat:

Jim Ruddle: For many years, newspaper coverage of Chicago's broadcast scene was random, uninformed and related to the well-being of broadcast entities owned by the paper doing the coverage. You changed that. You showed how it evolved as a business, with all other considerations reduced in importance. That was the most honest presentation possible in these times, and to do it day after day, year after year, was exceptional.

Jim Shea: Having someone to cover radio and TV exclusively at a daily newspaper is the mark of a sophisticated city. I would sincerely hope that someone takes your place -- or tries to. Everyone knows that when you've made the Feder column, you've really made it.

Peter Gallanis: I think what I found most compelling about your columns over the years is you never kowtowed to anyone, you told it like it was and let we readers make our own judgments. To me, that is journalism at its finest.

Woody Mosgers: Good for you, bad for us. I don't know what I'll do after all those years of skirt-lifting you've done for that extra peek.

Gavin Maliska: I can't say I always agree with you, and even think you have unfairly crusaded at times against people, innovations and concepts that could move our business into new ways of presenting information and telling stories. I even went so far as to blame you for keeping newscasts in Chicago from becoming more compelling simply because people feared how they would be portrayed in your column. But I have always respected your dedication to your column and your beat.

John Records Landecker: I don't know if you comprehend how much you have given Chicago radio folks to talk about. You made us feel important. I feel like the last person who cared has just left the building.

Jay Marvin: You'll be missed by a lot of us still left in a dying profession.

Terry Foxx: You are the gold standard for the Chicago Sun-Times. As a former afternoon drive host at B96, there wasn't a day that went by that I didn't rush to news stand near my home in Evanston to read your column. Even when I moved away from Chicago, I would go online to read your column.

Paul Greenlee: This probably is one of Joe Ahern's happier days lately. But it's a sad one for listeners/viewers in Chicagoland. Your work gave about as much of a voice as the public could have in the industry.

Eric Olson: I can't wait to read the book!

S.J. Peters: First Ebert and Roeper went off the air, and now Feder is leaving. Sad day. Sad, sad day.

P.J. Bednarski: You have always been an inspiration to me, and I think, to many others. You broke so many stories and you've always been a gentleman to me and everybody around you.

Ken Adams: You can't leave! Who will I complain to about Mancow?

Paula Hambrick: How I can take over your column? I am wired in the industry, I can write well, and it is time a woman did this. Where do I apply?

Lin Campbell: You can't leave the Sun-Times till we get Allison Rosati to throw out that grey jacket with white stripes.

Peter Casella: Cronkite was my hero too.

Tom Schutz: Besides being bald and wearing glasses, we also have in common a love for the local media issues. You were always very straightforward and professional in your reporting. That's what I admired most.

John Fitch: You played this all wrong. Certainly you could've pocketed a free trip to Beijing before you departed. As for me, the lack of your columns will provide me with five more minutes each day that I can be more productive at work.

Alan Mann: Does this mean no more columns of sick, twisted hate mail? I'll miss those.

Marty Jacobs: Good night, and good luck.
