Obama victory creates demand for Trib, presses crank out extra copies

Demand for Wednesday's post-election editions of the Chicago Tribune heralding Sen. Barack Obama's victory was so great, the newspaper has decided to re-start its presses this morning.

The initial run was approximately 690,000 copies, according to Becky Brubaker, the Chicago Tribune's vice president of operations, who said the exact number of extra had not been finalized but was expected to be between 50,000 and 120,000 additional papers.

The plan was to send hawkers out to replenish supplies at convenience stores and other single-copy outlets. Those outside the Chicago area who want to obtain a copy can call 1-800-TRIBUNE.

Similar demand led the Washington Post to print a 150,000 copies of an extra commemorative edition and the Cincinnati Enquirer to print an additional 10,000 copies today.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution moved its single-copy sales outside its building to accommodate demand. There reportedly was a link at the New York Times waiting for delivery of an extra batch of copies, and a line outside the Tribune store at Tribune Tower.
