Chicago Tribune promotes O'Hara, Moore to VP

Saying he sought to increase revenue and "right size the company," Chicago Tribune Media Group President, Publisher and Chief Executive Tony Hunter today announced a series of leadership moves in a memo to staff.

Kathleen O'Hara, 47, who has been director of consumer marketing and sales, was promoted to vice president of marketing and Brad Moore, 35, general manager of the Tribune's free RedEye commuter edition, was elevated to vice president of targeted media, effective immediately.

Owen Youngman, a Chicago Tribune veteran of more than 37 years who most recently has been senior vice president for strategy and development, is retiring but will continue to consult for the company.

The moves come three days after Hunter elevated Bob Fleck to replace Jack Whisler as vice president of advertising.

"Fortunately, we have a talented team positioned to continue to create innovative solutions to drive cash flow," wrote Hunter, who took the reins of the Chicago Tribune Media Group two months ago.

Susan Zukrow moves from the newspaper's business side into its newsroom as director of product development, reporting to Associate Editor Joyce Winnecke, who has directed the newsroom's audience and business development initiatives since August under senior vice president and Chicago Tribune Editor Gerould Kern.

Kathy Manilla, who had reported to Youngman, moves into advertising, under Fleck. As director of revenue development, Manilla is charged with developing revenue through events and multi-platform solutions.

Susan Jacobs is the paper's new director of retail advertising.

O'Hara will oversee all the paper's marketing activities as well as its community relations and communications efforts, unifying duties previously spread across several departments. As director of advertising marketing, Paula Rosentreter will take on added research duties, while Don MacGregor moves to director of consumer sales.

With Moore's promotion, he will be responsible for leading RedEye, the Spanish-language Hoy and hyperlocal Triblocal. Ted Biedron will continue to oversee Chicago Tribune Media Group's niche publication and serve as publisher of Chicago magazine as president of Chicagoland Publishing Co., but he will take on added responsibility for keeping tabs on the market's competitive landscape and potential strategic alliances.

Becky Brubaker has been promoted to senior vice president of manufacturing and distribution, assuming transportation and distribution oversight that previously came under circulation and consumer marketing.

Hunter, who previously headed the newspaper's operations and circulations, said Mike Owens will assume the role of director of commercial sales and logistics "to capitalize on printing and distribution revenue opportunities" and named Brian Karnick production director.
