Windy City Shakeup: Shomper To WLS

By Mike Stern

Tribune talk WGN/Chicago general manager Tom Langmyer makes the startling announcement that PD Bob Shomper (pictured) is leaving the station, effective immediately, to become the PD of WGN's crosstown rival, Citadel talk WLS-AM. Taking over for Shomper will be former Clear Channel/Cleveland regional VP of programming Kevin Metheny.

Exiting in the shuffle is WLS PD Kipper McGee.

The CC/Cleveland cluster includes news/talk WTAM as well as several music stations. Langmyer says that, over 10 years in Cleveland, Metheny took WTAM to No. 1 in the market as well as made the station a top 25-54 performer. "As a true radio guy, he has a great understanding and respect for WGN and what it means to Chicago," Langmyer says. "He also knows that WGN can be grown further in terms of relevance today as 'The Voice of Chicago.' Kevin has a real ear for talent and is a proven coach with a winning track record."

Metheny's previous experience includes serving as PD at KQQL/Minneapolis and KFRC-AM & FM/San Francisco. He was also GM of WAEV and WSOK in Savannah, Ga., as well as VP of programming and production for MTV and VH1.

Metheny, a longtime WGN fan, says, "I've loved Chicago and marveled at WGN since I was a child listening to Wally Phillips and Bob Collins. It's an honor to join the leadership of an American treasure like WGN Radio."

Langmyer is also complimentary of the departing Shomper, saying, "Bob has been instrumental in implementing a solid formatic structure and building a strong bridge between programming and the sales and marketing teams. Bob has also done much to prepare us for the recent transition to PPM, through programming adjustments designed to help us perform better with today's busy listeners."

Monday (Dec. 15) marked a day of big changes for WGN, as new morning show host John Williams took over for the retiring Spike O'Dell.
