Chicago's WBBM and WLS say "Thank you, Governor Blagojevich, for the great PPM shares."

Arbitron's just-out January People Meter stats suggest that Chicago was riveted by the shenanigans around Rudy Blagojevich's legal situation and his Senatorial pick. New #1 in Chicago - CBS all-newser WBBM (780). It shot up from a 6.3 in the "holiday" book to a 7.2, and its cume topped 1.8 million people. New #2 is Citadel talker WLS (890) - up 4.4 to 5.4. Ratings analyst Chris Huff tells T-R-I that to find a higher share for WLS-AM, you have to dial the Wayback Machine to the Musicradio days when WLS scored a 5.7. That was Fall 1980. The rest of the January survey (conducted January 8-February 4) shows that maybe Chicagoans were looking for a little relief from the political circus. True Oldies WLS-FM jumped 3.4-5.4 to tie sibling WLS-AM. Huff says that's the highest top-line share ever for the 94.7 frequency. But the most dramatic thing in the numbers (other than Blagojevich) is the spectacular fall of Clear Channel's soft AC WLIT-FM when the bubbles went out of the holiday cheer. The formerly all-Christmas station had a December 8.7 share, a holiday-book 10.3 - but a January 3.7.
