Daily Herald won't cover Sox, Cubs on the road

The Daily Herald had staffed Chicago's baseball teams home and away for more than 20 years. No more.

The Herald has decided not to send its beat writers Bruce Miles and Scot Gregor on the road to cover the Cubs and White Sox this year. Mr. Miles won't even be in Houston for the Cubs' season opener Monday.

The reason? Take a guess. It costs more than six figures to have writers out there for 81 games on both sides of town.

That means only the Tribune and Sun-Times will be staffing our teams on the road. Given the current newspaper climate, you even have to wonder how long it is before they tell their writers to stop packing their bags.
