These suburban "local" AM's are from a different era. WJOL in Joliet, WKAN in Kankakee, WMRO-Aurora, WRKS-Waukegan. They all prided themselves in community news, talk, etc. They understood that just playing music could not compete with the Chicago powerhouses on both AM & FM.
Once the bigger companies took over these frequencies, they didn't live in their communities and really didn't understand local radio. That is part of the reason NextMedia dismantled WJOL, Beasley did it to WMRO and Marathon to WRKS
