It might be too soon to call HD Radio a failure. However, it is a huge disappointment. It easily should have been radio's next evolutional step -- as FM was to AM, HD was the next level up. However, the radio industry has bungled the promotion of HD from day 1. It has been marketed completely wrong and treated like the proverbial red-headed step child, instead of the honor student it really can be. The cost of the units should have been reduced long ago. In fact, they should have had a promotion that gave them away for free. They should have worked harder to get them as standard equipment in new cars. They should have made the device "cool" to the public, like Apple did with it's iPod. They should have put better content on there and not just robotic, repeating playlists.

The HD Radio came out at about the same time as the economy collapsed and the radio industry collapsed even worse. Most companies saw dropping decent HD promotion as an easy way to cut their shrinking budget. HD Radio could have helped save radio, ironically, by bringing a new excitement to a stagnant industry.

HD Radio hasn't failed. The Radio Industry has failed HD Radio.
