Back when the network evening news was
'really important' Walter Cronkite's nightly, top-rated CBS broadcast was regularly referred to as the newscast of record. What that meant was - Chancellor (NBC) and Reasoner (ABC) didn't matter - refer to what Cronkite says only. He is the only guy who's really important. Hence, it is
an egotistical boast that is nothing but a different way to blow hot air for promotional purposes.
