10 Questions with ... George Mcfly

NAME: George Mcfly
LAST WITH: 957 The Party/Denver
WEB: www.justgreatadvice.com/GeorgeMcFlyPhoners.mp3 & www.audio.cvmediaworldwide.com/MCFLY2009

Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...

25 years in the biz...B-96/Chicago, Hot 103/New York City, Power 106/L.A. WAVA/D.C., X-100/San Fransisco KS-1075, Alice 1059, Kool 105/Denver.

1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?

It's the way I'm built. An eternal optimist. Even in these troubled times, I know it's just a matter of time before I find the perfect fit.

2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?

Lifting heavy weights in the gym everyday. I was so pissed Clear Channel cut me, I benched 315 for a double two hours later!

3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.

Hopefully, I won't have to be an armchair DJ for too long. In three months, I'm out of money, so a gig is necessary ... like food, water ... air.

4) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?

Yes. It's the only thing I know. It's my identity. Sad, in a way. I mean, a psychologist would have a field day with that, but I'm only being truthful.

5) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?

Know someone who works there. Preferably, not a jock.

6) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?

Why, All Access, of course!

7) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?

Casting couch with a female PD.

8) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?

High-profile daypart at a P-1 major market radio station. The reason I say that is I've worked for stations in the past with "signal" problems, and no matter how good you may be, you'll never get due credit.

9) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?

Well, I'm 'bout to find out from my next employer. However, I implore all talent to NOT set a precedent and work for a song, cuz a domino effect might occur, and we'll be worth very little.

10) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?

Yes, but not my old station. I'm saturating myself in Country, which I actually like a lot now that I've been listening to it again, because I'm hoping my next and hopefully my last gig will be here in Denver at KYGO, where they currently have an afternoon opening!

Bonus Question

Care to contribute a low-cost recipe to our "ON THE BEACH" cookbook?

My first gig was in Merril, Wisconsin doing 5:30 to midnight. I made $179 every two weeks, so I couldn't afford to buy food. A buddy of mine killed a black bear in his backyard, and I ate it every day for six months. Here is the recipe:

1- 8 oz piece of black bear
1- hot plate
Plug in hot plate.
Add bear.
Cook till charred.
Feeds 1 broke DJ.
