PBS' "Nightly Business Report" has named Tom Hudson, formerly of Chicago-based "First Business," to replace retiring Paul Kangas as its co-anchor.

Hudson is scheduled to make his first appearance Wednesday on "Nightly Business Report" and take over as Susie Gharib's co-anchor on Jan. 4, reporting from the show's headquarters at South Florida's WPBT.

Kangas, who was stock commentator when "Nightly Business Report" launched in 1979 and became its host in 1990, announced his retirement plan in May. Gharib has been his co-anchor from New York for a decade.

Carried by more than 250 PBS stations, the "Report" airs in late night -- typically between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. -- on Chicago's WTTW-Ch. 11.

“To now be a part of the fabric of this great show is both thrilling and humbling," Hudson said in the announcement, talking about his "passion for no-frills journalism."

Before the nationally syndicated "First Business," produced by a subsidiary of Weigel Broadcasting, Hudson was an anchor for WebFN.com and Chicago's old WMAQ-AM. A graduate of the University of University of Iowah, e also was news director at the Quad Cities Radio Group in Davenport, Iowa.

“He possesses the old school journalistic fundamentals we cherish, but he also has all the new school tools and understanding that will help us remain on top in the future," Rodney Ward, executive editor of "Nightly Business Report," said in a statement.
