Bill Adee named Chicago Tribune Media Group VP of digital development and operations

Bill Adee, the Chicago Tribune's digital editor, has been promoted to vice president of digital development and operations for the entire Chicago Tribune Media Group, effective immediately.

Adee, 45, will be responsible for digital product development, operations and strategy for a portfolio that includes the Tribune, RedEye, Hoy, Triblocal, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Home + Garden, chicagotribune.com and metromix.com.

He will report directly to CTMG President, Publisher and Chief Executive Tony Hunter, who announced Adee's appointment Thursday. But Adee will continue to have a reporting relationship to Senior Vice President and Editor Gerould Kern on day-to-day digital newsroom responsibilities.

Adee, whose first newspaper job was with the Waukegan News-Sun while still attending Waukegan East High School, was named sports editor of the Chicago Sun-Times in the summer of 1993 at age 28. He moved to the Tribune in 2002 but left the sports department in 2006 to become the paper's associate managing editor for innovation and last year became editor of digital media.

Among the initiatives Adee has led in trying to prepare the Tribune for its digital future has been the launch of ChicagoNow.com, a network of more than 140 local blogs.

In his new position, his duties expand to include development of new digital product and revenue streams, through search engine optimization, social media and mobile opportunities as well as strategic partnerships for CTMG.

Adee joined the Sun-Times in 1988 from the Los Angeles Daily News. A graduate of Northwestern University, he also previously worked at the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal, Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., Milwaukee Sentinel and the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights.
