In the dark

Paul Harvey's radio affiliates still await the rest of his story

A third failed Republican candidate for president filled in this week for Chicago radio icon Paul Harvey.

Following stints by Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee sat in for the ABC Radio commentator.

The 89-year-old Harvey has been working part-time since he was out on medical leave for two months and then out on personal leave after the death of his wife, Lynne "Angel" Harvey, in May.

While Harvey's affiliates are being kept in the dark about his plans, trade reports have begun questioning whether he might not return to his "News and Comment" franchise at all.

"Is Paul Harvey's show just quietly fading away?" read a headline in Radio-Info.com. One talk radio consultant predicted that Harvey would return for "one last goodbye."

As for rumors of Huckabee as a possible successor, critics were underwhelmed by his unofficial tryout this week. "Huckabee's vocal performance won't make anybody forget Paul Harvey," wrote Tom Taylor, executive news editor of Radio-Info.com.
