What was Don Wade like back in the day?

I found this old jingle used on WLS mornings back in 1987 (aprox.).

Back when he was a music DJ, what kind of personality did Don have? Was he actually a guy who had fun on the radio?

While I sometimes enjoy his show today, he does come across as an old crabby man, so I can't possibly envision him as anything else.
